The PFLP issued a statement mourning his death, saying that Dr. Anis Sayegh played a unique role as a creative thinker who emphasized the distinct role of culture in confrontation with the Zionist enemy. Dr. Sayegh was the founder and president of the Palestine Research Center, the groundbreaking Palestine Liberation Organization that produced countless volumes of literature in multiple languages detailing the history, culture and political struggle of Palestine and its people.
The contents of the research center, headquartered in Beirut were stolen by Zionist invading forces in 1982, and Dr. Sayegh faced several assassination attempts, including a letter bomb sent to him in 1972, which left him with permanent scars, partial hearing loss and blindness.
Dr. Sayegh, who initiated the idea of the Palestinian Encyclopedia, was born in Tiberias and was forced to leave Palestine with his family in al-Nakba in 1948.
The library of the Palestine Research Center, developed over 10 years by Dr. Sayegh, included approximately 25,000 volumes, in addition to documents, photographs, and microfilms.
The Front's statement on his loss noted that these assassination attempts were a testament to the greatness of his role. It added, "This man of great stature remained committed to Palestinian national goals and constants and will remain always in the national memory, linking national issues and national defense." The Front sent its deepest condolences to his family and friends, pledging to continue the process of struggle.
