The occupation is attempting to block the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine from playing its revolutionary role in unifying the Palestinian people, said Comrade Khalil Maqdesi of the Information Office of the PFLP on December 9, 2009, commenting on occupation forces' raids in Nablus that targeted grassroots activists that the occupation alleges to be members or supporters of the Front.
Comrade Maqdesi noted that the Israeli occupation is frightened by the convergence of the 42nd anniversary of the PFLP on December 11, 2009 and its symbolic link to the potential release of imprisoned PFLP General Secretary Comrade Ahmad Sa'adat in a prisoner exchange for captured occupation soldier Gilad Shalit. Comrade Maqdesi emphasized that such a victory for the resistance at a time of symbolic importance for the PFLP and the Palestinian revolution strikes fear into the occupation state, which reacts with raids, repression, kidnapping of activists, and military assaults.
Furthermore, said Comrade Maqdesi, Nablus, the largest city in the West Bank and all other Palestinian cities are suffering directly under military occupation and under constant threat of raids, invasions and assaults by the occupier, despite any claims or illusions of the Palestinian Authority of "independence" or "security control."
He noted that the occupiers' invasion of Al-Ein refugee camp failed in its goals, noting that occupation forces failed to capture or arrest PFLP leaders and instead kidnapped youth activists, including three teenagers under 17.
He said that these daily mass arrests that are being inflicted upon Palestinians are an attempt to negate the upcoming prisoner exchange with the resistance, noting daily reports of dozens arrested and hundreds arrested over the course of a month, most of whom are placed into administrative detention without charge or effective legal recourse.
Comrade Maqdesi denounced the Israelis' delays and obstacles placed in front of the prisoner exchange with the resistance time and time again, noting that the occupation is entirely responsible for the delay in the exchange and the continued capture of their soldier, Gilad Shalit.
Comrade Zaher Al-Sheshtary commented on the arrests, saying that this was an attempt to disrupt the 42nd anniversary events of the Front, and the sort of attempt that the occupation engages in every year. He said that these arrests only show the fear of the occupation in the face of a mobilized and active Palestinian people demanding their rights and building unity around their national cause, and that once again, the occupation would fail to hamper the plans of the Front in any way.
Comrade Rayya Amin noted that among those kidnapped in Nablus is well-known women's organizer and political prisoners' advocate Maysar Itiani, along with her brother Abdel-Nasser. She demanded the immediate release of Maysar Itiani and all of the other prisoners, saying that this arrest highlights the occupation's targeting of active women and prisoner advocates for arrest, persecution and imprisonment.
