On July 7, 2000, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine completed its Sixth National Conference, the first since the Fifth Conference, held in 1994. At this historic conference, participants affirmed key points. Dr. George Habash, founder of the PFLP and the Arab Nationalist Movement, also retired from his post as General Secretary. The Conference elected Abu Ali Mustafa the new General Secretary at the close of the second round.
